Burkina Faso: Mango producers unite in a National Union

On Thursday November 11th a general meeting was held in Bobo-Dioulasso to set up the National Union of Mango Producers of Burkina Faso. Representatives of the various sectors of mango production from five regions of the country took part. The Governor of the Hauts-Bassins region, Pascal Benon, presided over the opening ceremony.

On December 3rd 2005 (shortly before the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Hong Kong) the young National Confederation of Farmers’ Unions of Burkina Faso (Confédération Nationale Paysanne) showed that it has reached maturity. For the first time in history the people of Ouagadougou witnessed a march and a gathering at the Place de la Nation of 2 500 peasant farmers arriving from the 45 provinces of the country. They called for the recognition of food sovereignty as a right. Among them the Fulani herder women from the the Hamdalaye area of Ouagadougou turned up in great numbers, carrying their large calabashes with the inscription “COWBELL is not our milk” on their heads.

50 years without any real agricultural policy – that is a long time!

In Burkina Faso, Saturday December 11th is a day of festivity. The nation celebrates its 50 years of independence. But what about the Burkinabè citizens? The city of Bobo Dioulasso (capital of Independence Day commemorations this year) is probably all geared up for the event. But what happens in the villages?

 

Before expressing my best wishes for 2011, I would like to quickly look back on the past year. It was quite an eventful one, in particular for men and women farmers in Burkina Faso, who have been able to strengthen their organisations year after year.
